FUNKOUT!
What's a Funkout?
a) A Functionality Shootout.
b) A contest.
c) A source of inspiration.
All of the above. It's like a regular screenshot contest you'll see on tech site X or customization site Y, but minus the cruft - we don't care about looks - we care about functionality!
We know that a lot of you (not all, but a lot) actually use your computer, not sit on your chair all day admiring the special fx that consume all your resources, not sparing them for applications that actually do useful stuff, you know, like, word processors, web browsers, IDE's, etc...
So that's why WE, the nice people of VOIDBOX, more specifically myself and ~mini-mite, have put together this contest for the good of the (small but strong) functionality-oriented community.
As you well know, we are quite opposed to the (rather popular) convention of making your desktop computer look like some mothership mainframe controller out of Star Trek, or your laptop look like a holographic communication device from Star Wars, albeit entertaining it is to watch the lights go off on your 50 widgets and 4 auto-hiding taskbar-dock-things like it's Christmas everytime you move your mouse across the screen.
We say BAH HUMBUG! to petty "customization" like that. If you don't, and you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. This contest isn't about looks, it's about functionality, and if you can make your uber-functional desk look good too without making your CPU pay the price, go for it, extra brownie points.
How it works:
1) The aspiring contestant sends a private message to ~bl1nks or ~mini-mite (coordinators) with the following information:
a) Number of computers they wish to enter (max 2), f.ex, 1 desktop, 1 laptop.
b) Operating system(s).
c) Occupation, e.g., Developer, User, Sys Admin, etc...
2) After receiving a confirmation from a coordinator, the contestant creates a category in his devART gallery named FunkOut 08.
3) They read the rules below, and begin the screenshot process.
The rules:
1) The operating system must be either *nix(-based) or Windows. NO MACS. This is a contest for adults, not toddlers. Tally-ho.
2) All screenshots related to the contest must be filed in the FunkOut category as mentioned above.
3) A minimum of 2 screenshots and a maximum of 8 screenshots is allowed per contestant - 4 for each computer.
The first screenshot must be a "clean" desktop. No windows, no nothing - just your UI and wallpaper. For the description, use the template that was messaged to you by a coordinator. Write a "mini-manifesto" of your occupation, what you use your computer for, etc... Also include links or names of all visual aspects of your UI, whether visible in the screenshot or not - i.e., if you're on *nix, the GTK/QT theme, wm and wm theme, font, dpi, etc... If you're on Windows, the visual style/3dc, the shell/shell theme, etc. Make sure to include credits if you modified someone else's work.
The second screenshot must be a "dirty", or working desktop. But remember - DON'T FAKE IT. You'll lose brownie points if it looks like you totally faked a "working" desktop with unnecessary windows. Just be casual, do your everyday work, and at some point take a screenshot. Write anything useful in the description, explaining what's on the screen, how you work with it every day, etc. Try to imagine the viewer in your shoes with no idea what's going on.
The third and fourth screenshots are optional and don't have any guidelines. It's recommended, however, that you use them for explaining workspaces, additional UI areas you couldn't get to in the first two screenshots, etc. Make sure to include descriptions as well.
4) Since it's likely there will be tons of questions for the participants depending on how much of the functionality of their desktop is custom-made, it's recommanded the contestant also add links to custom scripts, configs, etc. This may be a complete archive of everything in the screenshot (that's custom-made) that's posted to their scrapbook/gallery, or an external site.
5) Last but not least, contestants cannot
How we judge:
A combination of my and ~bl1nks's personal opinion and judgement of the functionality of the desktop showcased, and of course the popular opinion, which is counted by the number of favourites. Wow's, love's, etc are NOT counted - so if you wish to vote for your favorite screenshot, you must
There will be a first place, second place, and third place.
The prize:
Seeing that both ~mini-mite and I are poor little lads still in high-school, there is sadly no carrots for you donkies, except for the fact that the winner will be named H4xx0r of the year, prize enough for many of you, eh?
Funky juju to all!
The contest ends Wednesday, December 31st, 2008. If it's successful, who knows, we may just do it again next year. Message any questions to ~bl1nks or ~mini-mite.

Update! Prizes available!
The generous ~aimeta has offered free hosting and a subdomain (one of mcx2.org, 0x32.ws, or 4bit.ws) to the 1st place winner! Props to him!
Devious Comments
That's a stupid and immature statement. I'm dropping you off my watch list. Btw, Macs are Mach and BSD which are most certainly not for toddlers.
I won't go into the technical details why the architecture of MacOS sucks, because everyone has got his own opinion and this should not be a Pro/Contra Mac flamewar!
I'm dropping you off my watch list.
