First off, apologies for the delay - ~mini-mite and I have been pretty busy this week with RL.
Second, thanks to all who participated! While the turnout wasn't quite as much as we had hoped due to the holidays and such and people being busy, we hope you had a fun time showing off your funktional desktop(s).
Seeing as this was the first contest ever, we had a bit of a struggle deciding how to judge, whether to give higher priority to votes, opinion, or something else, etc. Unfortunately, we noticed that many great contestants' entries weren't getting as much exposure as others, and while the entries themselves had nothing remarkably wrong with them that would hinder votes, that's exactly what happened, which is quite natural, considering this is the first time we've done this contest, and the judges/organizers themselves are relatively new to the whole deal.
So, here's what we decided: votes are good, but because there's such a huge gap between votes of various participants, we'll shoot for a balance between votes (i.e., favorites), the obvious good points/lack thereof of the entry, and personal opinion. We hope you don't mind that, and we must say: we pretty much liked every single entry, so it was really hard to pick out 3 that were the "best."
Usability and functionality are all relative to one's personal tastes, ability, and knowledge - in that sense, every entry is a winner - because you took the time to configure your desktop to make it look, feel, and function how you want it to, not some random corporation, a usability board, or even a single hippie open source developer with 3" thick glasses.
If you skipped down to this paragraph, I strongly suggest you scroll up and read the ones above first.
So, without further ado, the winners of the 2008 FunkOut contest:
*drumroll please*
1st place
~synorgy - Web developer/Graphic designer
At first glance, synorgy's desktop seems to be awfully plain, very little aesthetically pleasing elements, and a lot of UI elements like taskbars, etc are hidden from view. But that's not necessarily unusable. In fact, for him, it's probably a lot more usable than your typical, bloated desktop environment.
We really liked the simplicity of his desktop, the subtle gradients and barebones window decorations with no frills, and especially the fact that he didn't murder his usability by making his window-client area match his window-decorations. Sure, it doesn't look that great, but functionality-wise it pwns all.
So congratulations to ~synorgy - the winner of this year's FunkOut and a life-size, 2009 edition, platinum plated plastic Llama! YAY!!!! (ok ok, he doesn't get the plastic Llama)
2nd place
~vcrash - User/Student
~vcrash's entry was one of the more lacking ones in terms of exposure, we think. Nevertheless, he did a great job with everything - the GTK is slick, likewise can be said for the window-decorations (those buttons are genius), and overall his desktop is both visually appealing and excelling functionality-wise. Plus, he's using Archlinux, so can't go wrong there.
3rd place
=k3ttc4r - Web developer
Last but not least, =k3ttc4r made a splash with a monochrome, GNOME-filled entry - admittedly almost on the opposite end of the personal opinion spectrum of ~mini-mite and I.
Congratulations to the winners!
Honorable mention goes to everyone else who participated - ~kowic, your entry was superb as well, and visually great - ~canistra, your entry was very colorful and functional as well - and ~kastoob, you pwned face by being the only Windows contestant, and yours touched a personal chord by using bb4win.
Hope you all had a funtime, and we hope you'll join us next year if and when we do it again.
Peace.
